Police set up 420 temporary barricades island wide

A total of 420 temporary police barricades will be set up island wide from tonight (January 6th) in preparation for the upcoming presidential election. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana stated that in addition to the 420 temporary barricades, other barricades will be set up on a needs basis depending on the situation. The barricades are to be established to curb incidents of violence, especially incidents relating to the transportation of arms and ammunition in vehicles to incite violence. The Police have been instructed to search all vehicles thoroughly and take any suspects into custody.

In addition, the Police Media spokesman stated that as at midnight yesterday (January 5th) the Police had received 340 complaints relating to election violations and already 150 suspects have been taken into custody. Furthermore, the Police have been instructed to take all persons who engage in election related propaganda activities, either today or tomorrow, into custody and produced them before court, the SSP had stated. All election propaganda activities ceased last night at midnight (January 5th).
