Election propaganda continues in all 3 provinces, violating election laws

PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi says that his office has received nearly 30 complaints related to election and election violence incidents even after the campaign deadline on Wednesday.

   

Meanwhile US Embassy in Colombo stated that it has expressed its concern over the attack on the house of a candidate contesting the North Provincial Council election, her supporters and some NGO activists who are engaged in election observation in the province yesterday.

 

The Embassy also says in its press release that the attack should be transparently and independently investigate, and the perpetrators involved should be brought to justice swiftly.

 

The US Government has also calls on all parties to refrain from violence and observe a peaceful, free and fair election that would allow for the full expression of the voters to elect democratically the representatives of their choice.

 

However, the Government asked the international community today to refrain from expressing views less than 48 hours ahead of the polls date.

 

Several Western countries including the United States, German and Ireland have expressed different views on the North Provincial Council election during the 24^th Human Rights sessions at the UN conference now being held in Geneva.

 

During a media briefing held in Colombo this afternoon, Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said that different statements made by the international community could influence the last result of the election.
